This is pure genius! The folk over at What the Font have developed an iPhone application which allows you to simply take a photo with the built in camera, (or chose an existing picture from an album,) crop it to just the type, and upload it. After identifying the letterforms, it suggests a list of similar fonts, which you can either email to yourself, or go straight to MyFonts via the built in Safari.
And yes, it’s free. Happy font fishing! : )

Totally agree. Genius. But it’s a shame the iPhone isn’t so good at handling close up/macro photography. Tried it on some tiny type the other day without much luck.

“But it’s a shame the iPhone isn’t so good at handling close up/macro photography.” You mean ANY photography. Best laugh with the app is when you get a “WTF Error Message” Oh how I LOL’d.

That’s not true, the iPhone takes fine pictures in well-lit areas–better than many smart phone photos I’ve seen. Just dark settings and up-close are both weak.
Regardless, this app will surely come in handy at some point.

Regarding the iPhone not handling close up photos…here\\\’s a little secret for ya: Target Pharmacy has a little gizmo called ClearRx that they give out free with prescriptions – and without one if you ask politely
It\\\’s just a little square maagnifier about 2\\" x 2\\". Hold it over the camera lens and it will act as a temporary macro. The difference is absolutely amazing! It gets bar codes crystal clear. Try it and see!
Cheers!
