Fantastic new identity for the City of Melbourne created by Landor in Sydney. Lovely thought and great execution have made this an identity job which would be a joy to work with. Read and see more of the great work on this and a variety of other projects here

Just awesome. Some good debate over on Brand New – I loved Scott’s comment ‘Even the parking tickets are exciting.’

There’s been so much controversy surrounding this rebrand in Melbourne.
For one, the majority of the public can’t understand why so much money was spent on a logo (I can’t remember how much it was, but it wasn’t much for a full rebrand).
Then pretty much everyone decided they hated the logo. I hardly know anyone who likes it (I didn’t at first, but now I think it has great versatility and suits Melbourne quite well).
Then there was controversy in the Melbourne design industry, as to why a Sydney-based (US-owned) studio was chosen to design Melbourne’s new logo.
I suppose a rebrand like this is always going to garner some criticism.

Awesome, indeed! This sort of stuff makes me what to live there. As I said to Glenn on Twitter, I wish Miami got this type of treatment, to which he replied “Hey it’s a big M, they can use it for Miami as well
”
Jealous…

There’s was lots of controversy over this logo. Firstly, why did they pick a Sydney studio for the logo design and not one of the many talented Melbourne studios? Then for most of the general public, there was the question of money – why spend so much money on a big M? That mostly came from people that don’t understand the value of design or the design process.
I’m from Melbourne, and i am a bit undecided on this one.

The Statue of Liberty was designed by the French and the NYC subway by Italians, and they still works pretty well. Plus, it’s not just a Sydney based agency, it’s Landor, they’re the best at what they do and they did a great job. I think that hiring them shows that people in Melbourne care a lot about design, and I guess it will ultimately help raise standards there.

Not sure how anyone can dislike this brand, it’s gorgeous, Landor have done a fantastic job. Melbourne residents should count themselves lucky, they haven’t got to put up with London’s 2012 Olympic logo!!!

Having just returned from living and working in Sydney I can understand the controversy regarding Landor dealing with this although sometimes it has to be said you can be too close to something. Now there is plenty of great agencies in Melbourne like Co-op, Hofstede etc but obviously Landor came up trumps in the tender process? As for the budget controversy it was likely the same old story of the press saying taxpayers mnoney paid $x amount for this, showing absolutely no understanding of the time and effort that goes into a great identity/branding job like this. I think its diversity suits Melbourne very well having recently visited and in its structure the M reminds me of Federation Square. Excellent work.

I would say that a job as big as this would suit Landor than the indepdently-run Melbourne studios. Landor is a large agency so maybe that’s a possibility that they landed the job, in effect also employing many designers. Hwoever ‘gorgeous’ it is, I would only say that its effectiveness is how well it responds to a level of design tolerance. The problem is with so many colourway configurations, whether the State Goverment would adhere to such implentations. And is the entire design for Melbourne suppose to scream and shout or be more seamless and effortless? Blend into the natural landscape.

Anyone else find this has a lot of similarity in approach to the system developed by Wolff Olins for New York City??

I was recently in Sydney and the work was coming in for very heavy criticism. But, as pointed out previously, it was done in Sydney, and not Melbourne. They were only showing one version at that point. Now having seen the range of the “M”s I think it’s really good and adapts well to various uses. Why is our 2012 logo as good as this is my question. We are, after all, supposed to be design leaders here. It’s very sad.

I think it is great. The logo is apt and reflects not just the current crop of architecture and art in Melbourne’s landscape but the people. Who cares who designed it or where they are from. A swede designed the sydney opera house does that mean its not representative of sydney? The price? Yeah why should we pay designers a fair amount for the work they put in – so sick of people that think any one could have done that on Powerpoint. Just because you have a paint and brush doesn’t mean you can given Michelangelo a run for his money.

It’s really nice, looks fantastic and really fits with a forward thinking and cultural environment. My only question is, what is it really saying about the individual essence of Melbourne?
I live in Manchester, and this could easily apply here in much the same way – progressive, cultural, arty, etc… But no real point of difference. It could be for Munich, Madrid, any International city of that scale and substance.
A great job, wish I’d been involved…But when it’s not so fashionable, when the edgy-ness has subsided, what will be left? Probably a ‘from-scratch’ re-brand, in maybe 5 years.
Hopefully this will be seen as positive criticism and opening up a debate, I know how hard these jobs are, and don’t want to be seen as knocking good work because I’m bored…This is the first post I’ve been compelled to respond to.
