DESIGNerd is an intensely geeky trivia game created by Australian designer Kevin Finn. There are currently three sets, each with 100 questions written by someone well known in the industry— namely Kevin Finn, Steven Heller & Lita Talarico and Stefan Sagmeister. There are also architecture, fashion and product design versions in development. Much more fun for Boxing Day than Trivial Pursuit, though your Gran might not get many of the answers.

Aaron Koblin is an artist specialising in data and digital technologies. He has worked on the awesome Arcade Fire website for The Wilderness Downtown (see earlier FFF post here), aswell as the amazing Radiohead House of Cards project— which you can move around in 3D stylee on his website. Another more obviously data driven project, is the Flight Patterns project where he took data from the U.S. Federal aviation administration and processed it to create hauntingly beautiful animations of flight traffic patterns and density. Returning for its fourth year, Mortar&Pestle Studio have once again rounded up 30 emerging and established creatives to produce a poster celebrating a single, allocated day in September. The work has to be produced using non-digital methods, reflecting the concept of the exhibition as a means of exploring the fleeting importance of a single day within our increasingly fast-paced lives.

We’ve been sent a preview of the above contributions from Leterme Downling (Screen- print), Mat Williams (Pencil), Marie ERR (Acrylic paint on wood), and Charlie Hocking (Metallic bronze screen print on 135gsm Gmund Lager paper). Other contributors have chosen all manner of methods from screen-print and embroidery to hand drawing, cyanotypes and even light sensitive emulsions, resulting in an eclectic and diverse exhibition.

Private view is tonight (27th October) and is open doors 6—8:30pm—
The show is open until 1st November, 9.00am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday

The 100 Project sees a piece of art / illustration / photography auctioned every week for a year, each with a reserve price of £100. It’s a product of Poke’s Hack Day, the brief for which was ‘make your neighbourhood a better place’, and if one piece sells every week throughout the year, they’ll raise enough money to support 100 local teenagers for a term, at The Prince’s Drawing School. There are some crackers, including this signed classic. You can only bid on each week’s selected item, so keep checking back regularly to see what’s currently up for grabs.

Johnson Banks have updated their site, with a tweak to the design and also some new projects, including a refresh for Virgin Atlantic. But don’t panic — Thought for the Week survived the reshuffle.

Ben Anslow has just graduated from Staffordshire Uni, and exhibited at D&AD New Blood, where I spotted his Scapegoat poster (shown). A nice wee set of projects on his website too I think.

Alphabetical are Bob Young (ex Together & The Partners) and Tommy Taylor (ex HGV). They’ve have just launched their site with a good mix of clever ideas and smart art direction, for some impressive clients. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Vivian Maier was a nanny in Chicago between the ’50s & ’90s. In 2007, local historian John Maloof happened to purchase a lot of over 100,000 photographs and undeveloped negatives in an auction, all shot throughout her life but never shown to anyone. This now critically acclaimed street photography from Chicago & New York plus the various places to which she travelled, are gradually being developed and curated on his blog. A compelling story, and some beautiful and intriguing photographs taken by a remarkably talented, yet very private woman.
