The Brighton Degree Show

The Brighton University Graphic Design and Illustration Degree Show site is now live. Some impressive work on display, I love Sarah Hatch’s branded Icon poster of Jesus.

The Private View is tonight, and the show will run for the next week.

Lincoln – Show ‘09

Lincoln School of Art & Design’s graphic design degree show opens tomorrow night with a private viewing and will be open to the public from the 16th until the 22nd of May. The students have put together a decent site containing all the students work.

I know you’re busy people, so I’ve picked my top 3 from this year. In no particular order: Tom Lovell, Simon Mortimer, David Marsh – who all seem to have worked on this nice little catalogue of their show.

The Designer Auction – 2009

The Design Auction is organised by students and tutors from the third year BA Hons Graphic Design degree course at the Lincoln School of Art and Design.

Ravensbourne— ‘Love me Hate me’

Ravensbourne’s degree show opens tonight, a little later than most of the colleges and it’s only open ’til tomorrow so if you fancy a peek, you’d better be quick!

Some nice work, although that sticker style is rather familiar…

D&AD New Blood

D&AD New Blood was on this week and with thousands of students travelling from all over the country to show off their work, here’s a roundup of something the best thing we saw on show. Of all the work in show this year it appears there’s a massive trend of cut out style illustration and graphics – especially laser cutting. Some people have managed to execute it well and others not so well.

All in all though he’s my run down of top five people to watch out for over the coming months.

Jonathan Naismith – Great typography and promotional work for the Royal Opera

Ela Hawes – Some interesting and challenging photography

Tom Rowe – Beautiful screen prints and great quality of finished work

Jason Holroyd – Doing laser cutting the right way

Alec Doherty – A lovely and captivating set of illustrations

Other FFF favourites were showing including James Houston at the GSA stand who also had some really great video work – check out his folio if you’ve never seen it. Finally Graham Sykes of EATeacake had some great work on show especially a nice little book on the sea side and finally Ciara Phelan.

Fortunately there was a lot of good work on show and I’m sure it will get the publicity it deserves over the coming weeks. Institution-wise, there were a handful that really stood out as producing consistently good work. In no particular order; Duncan of Jordanstone, Glasgow School of Art, Bath, Bournemouth and finally Brighton. All of them had amazingly high quality of finished work across the board.

Finally from Central Saint Martin’s Christopher Svensson really struck accord with my love for knitting .

One of the biggest pet peeves of D&AD New Blood for me was the number of students who didn’t have a website or had a coming soon page. I think was mentioned on The Serif recently. Even a PDF of some of their work would suffice as there is nothing worse than seeing some great work, taking a card and then being able to easily find that work online for reference later.

So that wraps up D&AD New Blood for another year.
