Studio favourite Russell Bell is widely known for his maps and infographics. There are some lovely examples to be found on his site.

It always struck me that a good indicator of the general public’s awareness and appreciation of design could be judged by product packaging on supermarket shelves. Perhaps an unexpected source of good graphic design – the Sainsbury Supermarket’s in-house design team (which launched in 1963) took design very seriously during the 60′s and 70′s. They produced some truly fantastic packaging solutions for everyday products using bold geometric shape and colour. Here are a few examples but you can see more at the Museum of London Docklands. There is also a book available – Own Label: Sainsbury ‘s Design Studio, 1962-1977, by Jonny Trunk by Fuel (found at the Guardian)

Aaron Koblin is an artist specialising in data and digital technologies. He has worked on the awesome Arcade Fire website for The Wilderness Downtown (see earlier FFF post here), aswell as the amazing Radiohead House of Cards project— which you can move around in 3D stylee on his website. Another more obviously data driven project, is the Flight Patterns project where he took data from the U.S. Federal aviation administration and processed it to create hauntingly beautiful animations of flight traffic patterns and density. The first issue is dedicated to Data, and features some insightful articles and some tastefully done information graphics. Well worth a read.

I’m sure you’re shocked by recent events in Japan as we all are here at FormFiftyFive. Daniel Freytag from Berg/Editions of 100 has been trying to think of a way to help and has designed a special limited edition print which will is now available for sale through the Editions of 100 website. 100% of all proceeds from sales will be donated to the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. I have bought the first print to get the ball rolling so there is 99 editions of this left which will hopefully help to make some small difference to those whose property, homes and lives have been shattered by this disaster.

The poster is Litho printed and available in B2 size Justin Hobson from Fenner paper has very kindly donated the paper needed for the print.

We’ve got a treat for you all this morning. An fantastic – free – resource of infographics. The Noun Project’s mission is to share, celebrate, and enhance the world’s visual language. Their goal is to collect and organize all the symbols that form our language into one easy-to-use online library that can be accessed by anyone. All the symbols on their site are completely free to download, and can be used for design projects, architecture presentations, art pieces – just about anything. They think a visual language that can be understood by all cultures and people is a pretty amazing thing.

Leftloft is an Italian treasure which we seem to have overlook until now. Having previously employed Francesco Franchi (now art director of IL) it should be no surprise the agency has similar qualities. At the forefront of these is literature design, demonstrated by their über tight development of communist newspaper, il Manifesto.
