I’m assuming that most of you learned design-types out there enjoy reading Mr Michael Johnson’s Thought for the Week from time to time. Even so, I thought this rather charming entry was worth sharing. It’s a series of anonymous Post-it notes from students of the Graphic Design & Photography course at Kingston University with answers to the question, ‘Why do you want to become a graphic designer?’ Wouldn’t mind seeing some more of these!

Here’s another Central Station flavoured update which will be of particular interest to those of you who reside in or around the Tayside area. (Good old Dundee—miss the place!) There are loads of events planned for the Central Station Dundee Pop-up Tour on Saturday 6 February, make your choice of events ranging from talks (Johanna Basford is a notable name amongst some other great speakers), tours, film screenings, and exhibition viewings. Sound good? Then check the Central Station events page for full listings.

In the mean time, if you are in the City of Discovery at this moment in time, keep your eyes peeled for the event posters which should be starting to appear any minute now. Designed by Dundee-based illustrator / graphic artist Superfly and featuring the work of five Dundee-based artists who will feature at the event. Feel free to take some snaps if you spot them and upload your pics to the Central Station Dundee Pop-up Group to share with the community.

I loved my time studying at Duncan of Jordanstone, but if I was to do it all over again it’d probably be at Scandinavia’s most high-profile creative institution, Sweden’s Hyper Island. I became aware of the course back in The Day while at art college, through one of their promotions (they created and packaged vinyl toys). Since then i’ve admired the course and it’s graduates from afar, so was delighted to stumble across this video, getting more of an insight into the processes behind the work.

First of all Tony Smith wins the Bag of Bees T-Shirt! His T-Story was picked from all the other submissions to win him a shirt from the all new Bag of Bees Shop.

“My oldest tee is only about 14 months old but it’s not about how old you are it’s about what you’ve done and the quality of life you’ve had. On August 24th 2008 I left the UK to go traveling and after 386 days on the road, visiting, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, Indonesia, Australia and Fiji i returned home and 1 of my original tee’s that I had left London with all those weeks ago came with me.

It may still be a baby as far as tee’s go but it’s had an eventful life. Here’s to the next trip!”

Rob Edwards wins the Hello Von print to mark the launch of the new Von Shop. He answered correctly that Von took a split degree at university of Illustration and Animation.

Burnley is a large market town in the borough of Burnley in Lancashire, England, with a population of around 73,500. It has a 24 lane bowling alley, a 9-screen multiplex cinema and can now boast a new logo as part of a £110,000 re-branding scheme to improve the town’s image. That’s the good news. The bad news (and that’s just my opinion) is the city has chosenthat logo.

Developed by Burnley Vision Board after it secured £300,000 of funding from the North West Development Agency (NWDA), the ‘visual expression’ consists of a computer-generated, three-dimensional image of lots of multi-coloured, tangled circles. That much everyone can agree on. It’s how to interpret the marque where opinions begin to differ.

I’ve seen it described as ‘gutsy’ offering a ‘pretty original interpretation on growth and movement’. Also, as having an ‘amorphous nature’ which lends itself to new media, boldly breaking away from the accepted conventions of static identities. Make your own minds up on that by visiting the website.

Counilor Gordon Birtwistle, leader of Burnley Council, said “Burnley might have been a mess eight or nine years ago, but this shows we’re on the up. It’s bright and unusual and really exciting. I think it’s a brave choice, but I haven’t heard anyone with a bad word to say about it.

Others have been less complimentary, Conservative Councilor Jonathan Gilbert said “The logo is not the best I have seen. Animated it looks like some kind of deformed insect. Is it dynamic? I don’t think so.”

With some suggesting “Burnley looks like a mess”, “it looks like an exploded slinky” or ” the result of a middle manager being let loose on a 3D rendering program.”

Most intriguing/worryingly was Counilor Gordon Birtwistle boast they “had beaten stiff competition from others who had been interested in using the logo.” How is that possible? Was the same logo touted around by some door-to-door identity salesman? If that was the case then surely Burnley’s new identity can have absolutely no relevance to the location?

The Lancashire Telegraph’s poll shows 84% of people who voted ‘hate’ the new logo. What do you guys think?

We’re digressing a little from the things directly design related for something a little more trivial. That is US President Barack Obama’ surprising award of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples”. You can read a fairly extensive article about the Obama’s win, over at the BBC’s site.
