I Really like Bernhard Lang’s aerial photography. In a short article on Phaidon’s Agenda site, he talks about finding ‘the perfect distance’ — I think this is what I enjoy most about his photos, they’re not the typical aerial shots, the kind of photos that look good just because you’re up so high.

Here’s the full text from Agenda:
Munich-based photographer Bernhard Lang’s photos of humanity at rest – skiing, sailing, swimming or just lying around – have an eerie remove to them. The viewer can’t actually tell if the photographer is 300 feet above or perhaps 3,000 feet. Lang says he’s obsessed with finding what he calls “the ideal distance – the point where humans and nature could live together in a perfect match.”

It’s an obsession that’s taken him on a two-year journey across the world from Siberia to the Sahara – mostly by light aircraft. His large format camera photos capture the chaos of mankind in a natural environment – the disorder of beach towels laid out on a lakeside; and the order and pattern created by snow-capped trees and lines of corn in a field. Whatever the personal concerns of his subjects far below, looking at them from so far above tends to render them literally insignificant.

In response to the devastating Christchurch earthquake earlier this year photographer Fabrice Wittner set out to confront the destruction the best way he knew how: by making art. His Enlightened Souls project utilizes large, human-sized stencils that are painted with light during long exposures. More images & process shots can be seen here.

How long before we see this process translated to a big advertising campaign? Spotted on the excellent Colossal.

Central Station are currently going through some big changes, with Central Station v2 set to launch at the end of this month. The primary change to the site will be a shift in focus away from being an online community towards becoming a ‘network of networks’. Those with profiles and work on the site may want to make sure they have their projects available to view on other networks such as Béhance, Flickr and Vimeo, as the Portfolios section will be removed as part of the change. You can read more about the changes in the recent Central Station v2 blog post.

As part of the launch, Central Station will be running ‘50 Artists in 50 Days’, which will see a different member featured every day for the first 50 days of v2. A great opportunity to gain some free publicity if you get in there early enough. Check the 50 x 50 post in Central Station’s Opportunities section for details.

I almost posted about the intricate deconstructed/industrial illustrative work of Atelier Olschinsky a few weeks ago. Glad I waited, as they’ve since added some stunning editorial photography under the title 1000km, shot for Nevertheless Magazine.

Reminds me of the beautiful shots by French photographer Laurent Nivalle from the 2010 Le Mans Classic we featured last year.
