Michael Bojkowski is one of those guys who must be able to bend time. The amount and quality of content he produces is envy inducing. Involved in lot sof different projects and studios on a freelance basis I’m sure this certainly helps.

His freelance studio ok interrupt showcases a strong folio of editorial design and publishing boast clients such as Esquire UK and YCN. LineFeed/Press Publish another side project, is a chance for him to discuss his indulgent love of magazines and dable in independent publishing which I’m sure has helped land him lots of work and guest contribution in this field of design such as contributing monthly graphic design staple, Grafik Magazine.

The long list of work goes on. If you’re short on time though I recommend checking out Michael’s comprehensive flavors.me site for a good overview. If you have some more time, watching one of the Line Feed Reading Lists or this interesting video of London typographic history tour are both highly recommended.

Untitled Magazine is the brain child of designer and art director Mike Perry. The latest copy of the magazine dropped through the FFF post box recently which was a nice surprise. A hefty little publication, it’s more like a paper back book than a magazine, but the simple lack of colour, monotone patterns for the end papers and the diverse range of creative work on show makes for an interesting read.

Though this is Mike’s baby it’s great to see him handing over the design to Emily Anderson and curation to Anna Wolf in the latest issue. Next issue sees guest curation by creative agency Hugo & Marie on the topic of Love & Sex for which we expect big things. Issue 4 showcases work from Ana Laura Perez, Georgia Kokolis and Lizzie Stewart to name but a few as well as the peculiar cover by Løber Nøgen which shows of a bunch of guys streaking.

Mike Perry Studio’s work is also worth checking out for its mixture product and furnishing design, illustration, publishing and a whole lot more. It’s pretty clear the studio has a lot of room for creative exploration and the work in places has psychedelic influences. Mike is also the guy behind the book Hand Job in 2006, showcasing examples of hand drawn typography.

Untitled Magazine has published it’s fourth issue and is available through the Untitled Magazine site as well as back issues with plenty of shots so you can see before you buy, something we’re always a big fan of.

Since Unit Editions released their debut title last year, Tony Brook and Adrian Shaughnessy, self confessed book lovers have very kindly been creating a wealthy resource of photographing some of their favourite titles from their book shelves. A lot of said titles are design classics and often out of print.

There’s some great examples on display, and more and more are being added. It’s a really positive step for the graphic design community, hopefully we might see more publishers doing them same with titles that are out of print even if their not necessarily their own works.

Papercraft is the fourth book from Gestalten documenting the growing trend of hand crafted creations. Following on from Hidden Track , Tactile and Tangible, Papercraft focuses on paper as a means of creation and expression of ideas through this common medium.

Highlighting the importance of paper historically, Papercraft begins by discussing how paper once symbolised a means of democratisation in distribution information. With the advent of digital technology over the last 30 years offering the copy & paste culture of infinite permutations, a framework was born to rebel against this in the form of the DIY hand-crafted creations that Papercraft showcases. Split into five sections the book covers work from publications and posters to 3D objects such as paper toys and installations, through to fashion and costume as well as typography and environments showing the diversity of these paper creations.

At first glance, I couldn’t help feeling I’d seen a good chunk of the work before—not surprising considering the coverage many of these practitioners have received for their work in the press and numerous publications over the past 12 months. After a more thorough read and despite the familiarity I was sucked in by the labour of love that is evident in this work.

Using such a fragile material intrinsic with ‘hands-on’ work it’s clear the process and to some extent suffering that has gone into the pieces shown is as equally important as the end result – suggesting why this niche craft is so intriguing (Hina Aoyama’s work being a stunning example).

The book is well put together with the usual high quality design and production value expected from Gestalten. The book’s designer Birg Meyer has detailed the content sympathetically, using a flexible grid that offers a variety of images big enough to really illustrate the work displayed. Complemented by a simple layout this allows the intensely detailed work to speak for itself. The inclusion of DVD content is also a nice surprise. A collection of animation work featured in the book alongside printable nets of some paper toys help bring life to boring studio desks and are a cheerful addition.

Papercraft fails through a sporadic lack of organisation. Peppered throughout are small profiles about the work of the designers which run alongside the captioning. These give some insight into the material but are a little under used and could have more potential. In a publication where the ‘art of making’ equals the ‘end product’ these curated sections could offer a behind the scenes look at the process that goes into the piece on show. Videos of some installations would also give a real appreciation of the factors influencing the work.

Overall Papercraft does what it says—showcases a diverse collection of work created using paper, more concentrated than its predecessors allowing it to hold its own. The content of the book is extremely niche which might not suit everyone. If you enjoyed Tactile et al, you’re likely to enjoy this fourth edition. The DVD makes the title a little more out of the ordinary for a book of this price. A good reference point and one you are bound to find inspiring. So much can be created from the same pulpy based material leaving you with a feeling of awe for the higher state of focus leading these designers to produce such stunning work. It will be interesting to see if this is the last book we see on pseudo 3D rephotographed type work or is there still plenty of mileage in this niche genre?

They’ve now branched out from their usual domain with Gestalten TV, a look behind the scenes of many of their publications, focusing on the process and design behind them along side interviews with the artists and designers featured in them.

Available through the motion section of their site or through the iTunes Music Store, they’re usually pretty short—about 3 to 5 minutes—but offer a real insight to this behemoth of a publisher and are pretty well produced and in some cases show off the beautifully designed book spreads. We’ve managed to watch a good number of them now on the commute to work and highly recommend checking out United Visual Artists, soon to be released Papercraft and interview with Julien Vallée (shown above).

To keep us on the edge our our seats with anticipation, It’s Nice That have taken a bold move (a decision we’re very keen on) to put a selection of the spreads up online along with a listing of articles and features in Issue 2. In the same good natured approach, they’ve also put together an online version of Issue 1 which has now sold out (some spreads from Issue 1 pictured below).
