A week-long programme of typographic study in London for recent graduates and professionals. Alongside live projects run by Fraser Muggeridge, the school will host talks, seminars and tutorials from daily visiting practitioners: Sara De Bondt, Paul Elliman, Ken Garland, Jeff Knowles (Research Studios), David Pearson, Robert Sollis (Europa).
20 places are available for each week: 5–9 and 12–16 July 2010.

Anthony Burrill is speak at Long Lunch’s next event in my old haunting ground of Edinburgh College of Art. The talk is taking place in the main lecture theatre at Edinburgh College of Art, on Tuesday 9th February 2010 and tickets cost £8 / £6 concessions. As always Long Lunch through collaborations with the speaker, printer and paper partners have done a great job of producing a stunning poster which you can pick up for free on the night.

Tickets are available through Long Lunch, doors at 7.00pm and the talk starts at around 7.30pm. It should be an interesting talk from a designer has become hot stuff over the last couple of years.

Another month, another Long Lunch talk for our London readers. The next talk at Westbourne studios is taking place next Tuesday (2nd February 2010) with speaker Tom Muller of Hello Muller and Kleber fame taking centre stage. To promote the event this shocking orange fluro ink 811 post has been printed which is apparently so bright you can see it from space. If you fancy getting your hands on a copy as well as seeing Tom speak about design, Sci-Fi, comics, logos and much more do the right thing and buy a ticket for next weeks talk.

A web-based project, Thirty Conversations on Design collects the thoughts of 30 of the world’s leading designers, architects and authors. Thirty Conversations… is  the brainchild of Joe Cecere, Creative Director at Little&Company, a strategic branding and design firm located in Minneapolis in the US.

Each participant in the project is asked to consider two questions: “What single example of design inspires you most?” and “What problem should design solve next?” — the varied responses make
for compelling viewing. Among the first batch of interviews are Pentagram’s Paula Scher, branding stalwart Massimo Vignelli
and, my favourite, the irrepressible Professor Erik Spiekermann.

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned the Universal Everything Long Lunch talk, well they’re at it again, running another talk this coming Thursday with Unit Editions, comprised of duo Adrian Shaughnessy & Tony Brook (Spin). For all our readers in London if you haven’t come across St Brides near Fleet Street it’s a great resource for graphic designers. As part of their every growing resources and in collaboration with TYPE, they’ve been running Typographic Tours around London which give an insightful look at the history of the Fleet Street area. I had the opportunity to go along to one recently, guided by John Voller who was a wealth of historical information.

The tours run from St Brides to Fleet Street to the Noon Dial at Paternoster Square to Museum of London and the Barbican and then back round to St Pauls picking out various places of historic typographic interest both new and old. It seems to be a running theme how much of the industry or printing came to be because of religion in the 15-16th Century onwards. They attract some fascinating people from the industry that are just as interesting as the history and locations themselves.

The tours run a couple of times a month and cost £10 which includes a donation to St Brides. More details can be found on the TYPE website and booking for future tours.
